Right Side Pain: What It Can Mean and the Liver Area
Right side pain —under the ribs— is one of the discomforts that raises the most questions. This educational guide explains what's in that area and why it sometimes relates to the liver.
What's in the right side
The upper right quadrant of the abdomen holds the liver and gallbladder. That's why discomfort there sometimes points to that area, though it can have many causes.
How it feels
Heaviness, pressure or a dull ache under the right ribs are frequent descriptions. The liver itself rarely hurts easily, but its capsule and neighboring organs can give signals.
The link to fatty liver
A liver enlarged by fatty liver can stretch its capsule and cause discomfort. It's one reason imaging —the ultrasound— adds so much.
When it's a sign to seek care
Severe, persistent pain, or pain with fever, vomiting or jaundice needs prompt professional attention. This is education, not diagnosis.
