Hepatomegaly: What an Enlarged Liver Means on Your Report

If your report says hepatomegaly, this matters to you.

What hepatomegaly is

It is an enlarged liver. "Hepato" = liver, "megaly" = enlargement. The radiologist measures it against reference ranges.

Common causes

One of the most common is fat accumulation: fatty liver (steatosis). Other metabolic conditions too.

Why it matters

A large liver can stretch its capsule and cause right-side discomfort. It is a cue to look at metabolism.

The method's view

Liver size and brightness on imaging tell a story blood may not show.
