Hydronephrosis and Ureteronephrosis: What It Means on Your Kidney Ultrasound
If your report mentions hydronephrosis or ureteronephrosis, here it is in plain words.
What they mean
Hydronephrosis is dilation of the kidney from urine buildup ("hydro" = water, "nephro" = kidney). If the ureter dilates too, it's called ureteronephrosis.
How it looks and is graded
Ultrasound shows dilated kidney cavities. It's described in grades (mild, moderate, severe) by how much they dilate.
Common causes
Obstruction to urine flow, such as a stone (lithiasis), is a typical cause.
The method's view
Imaging shows the urinary system in real time, with no radiation.
