Splenomegaly: What an Enlarged Spleen Means on Your Report

Splenomegaly is another report term worth understanding.

What splenomegaly is

It is an enlarged spleen. "Spleno" = spleen, "megaly" = enlargement.

How it's measured

The radiologist measures the spleen's long axis and compares it with normal ranges.

The spleen and liver share circulation. In certain advanced liver conditions the spleen can grow, which is why it's observed alongside the liver.

The method's view

Looking at the whole abdomen —liver, spleen, bile ducts, kidneys— gives the real picture.
